Creativity Explored Gives Artists with Developmental Disabilities a Creative Outlet and a Market

For nearly four decades, Creativity Explored has been delivering impact in two ways: by enabling artists with developmental disabilities express themselves creatively and then helping them make a living selling the resulting artwork. The organisation's 130 artists work in two studio spaces in San Francisco's bustling Mission and Potrero Districts, and they can display and sell their creations from the street-front gallery space.

“It was a really great way to combine all these ways of tracking information. It was a huge time saver.” Ann Kappes, Director of Licensing, Creativity Explored

Gaining More Control Over Data

Stretched to the max
Over the past decade, Creativity Explored's budget has more than doubled, from $1.5 million to $3.2 million. That meant more fundraising and more grants coming in—and more art—with a digital database that now contains 22,000 images. This accelerated growth rate tested the organisation's ability to scale.
Fighting a hairball
Creativity Explored found itself tracking its business with a hairball of disconnected systems, including an Excel spreadsheet for donors. A lot of time was wasted entering and combining data manually, highlighting the need for a more robust system.
No looking back
In 2013, a database consultant's recommendation led Creativity Explored to evaluate NetSuite, and it's never looked back. Since its implementation, the organisation has spent far less time collecting and managing data, and instead analyses and uses its data to its advantage.
Coming: more integration
Creativity Explored looks forward to the benefits of further integrating and cross-pollinating its data. It's also making strategic preparations to fully integrate its services—a needs assessment will help determine how NetSuite can help.
